A sixth generation New Zealander, Adele Earnshaw was born in Hastings in 1949. She lived in Warkworth before immigrating with her family to the U.S. Her childhood in New Zealand has had a major influence on her work and choice of subject matter today.
Adele has gained International recognition for her watercolor paintings of birds and wildlife. She likes long, narrow formats and paints light to dark with transparent washes. Adele enjoys pacing patterns of light and shadow in a balanced composition with a bird "tucked in
somewhere."
She's fond of patterns that make up handmade quilts using many layers of washes or glazes. Adele also seeks compositions in desert cactus, the stripes of an American flag or in roses and lace designs. Cropping her images, she creates backdrops of light and shadow which provide her with camouflage for a detailed focal area -- usually a small bird.
Her interest in painting wildlife is best summed up by her own words: "We need to paint not just to earn a living, but to leave something behind."
