H. Dean is motivated by challenge. His inspiration comes from agriculture which is truly an American heritage that is respected and embraced.
He selects fragments and subjects originating from this culture for his paintings. They are real, but represent otherwise. If categorized, his paintings are traditional abstracts. Form and composition.... Contrast and shadows.... This approach of interaction of light and form spark interest and awe in the realm of American agriculture.
Painting is his way of rediscovering the world. It is a learning process involving the ability to see, which is much more than looking with the eye.
Education:
Dean attended the American Academy of Art under the tutelage of Irving Shapiro. At that time, he was recruited by Hallmark Cards in Kansas City as an illustrator. After moving to Kansas City, he completed his education at the Kansas City Art Institute. Over his career, he has been employed by Disney, Cap Cities and ABC as an illustrator and art director. He now is devoting his life to painting watercolors and egg temperas on his own schedule.
